DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION & SWAYAMSIDDHA SOCIETY ( A Joint Venture)

Project SAKHI was inaugurated by Hon'ble Chief Minister , Govt. of Haryana Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar ji on 06-02-2015. This is a scheme of District Administration & Swayamsiddha Society. This project will help to reduce the incidences of PID among young girls & women. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is one of the major causes of infertility, spontaneous abortion & maternal deaths in India. About 14% of women aged 16-22 are diagnosed with PID every year in rural India. PID is 70% more common using unhygienic practices and using old clothes instead of sanitary napkins. In India, 97% rural women use old clothes instead of sanitary napkins leading to increased maternal and infant mortality and morbadity. Even in school going girls, there are lot of drop out cases esp. after 5th or 6th class as majority of schools are lacking separate toilets for girls. In view of the stigma and social taboo associated with sanitary napkins, majority of female population after the age of menarche, feel embarrassed and hesitate to go the commonly known, manned and often crowed conventional/medicine outlets for sanitary napkins resulting that 14 % of these female population suffer from pelvic infections including white discharge ( Leucorrhoea), itching/burning, swelling and frequent urination. All these conditions leads to infertility, spontaneous abortions & even maternal deaths, thus leading on to increased maternal and infant mortality and morbidity.

‘SAKHI’ is a new thought & pilot project of Dr.J.Ganesan, Deputy Commissioner, karnal & Dr. Ranjana Sharma, President,Swayamsiddha Society in this regard to provide hygeinic sanitary napkins to the school & college going girls. This will help in decreasing incidences of PID in young female population & thus helps in decreasing maternal and infant mortality and morbadity.

On the occassion Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar ji, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Haryana also flagged off a battery operated van ( donated by Panjab National Bank) for carrying stock to different schools & colleges for refilling vending machines.

Under this project, 10 automatic sanitary vending machines & incinerators are installed in female washrooms of various Govt. Colleges & Sr. Sec. Schools. Girls can operate these machines by putting coins and get sanitary napkins and also destroy the used napkins in incinerator in washrooms only. This project will tackle the problem of purchasing sanitary napkins and also provide round the clock quality sanitary napkins. This machine will not only provide anytime availability & accessibility of sanitary napkins but also reduces interaction with unfamiliar persons while purchasing it.

Two Asha workers are deputed from Health Deptt. to carry the stock & refilling the vending machine. A battery operated van is donated by Panjab National Bank for this purpose. On one hand this project is helping young girls to get hygeinic napkins without any hesitation & helping to lessen the chances of PID and on second side, cleaniness is maintained in and around the campus as used napkins are destroyed in washrooms only.

Till may before summer vacations, about 3000 packs of sanitary napkins were taken from vending machines & about 5000 girls are being benefitted by this project.
